Great Apes and Rainforests

Overview

The Albertine Rift is perhaps the richest location in Africa for both mammal and bird diversity and endemism.
It is also one of three locations in Africa that is most important for primate diversity and conservation. On this journey, see two great ape species: the Endangered mountain gorilla, as well as chimpanzees, and help habituate chimpanzees for sensitive future ecotourism.

Day 1 (01 May)

Road transfer Kigali to Bisate Lodge

Day 2 (02 May)

Gorilla trek, overnight Bisate Lodge (Kinigi), evening lecture on gorilla social dynamics, and the requirements for park expansion

Day 3 (03 May)

Drive along the shores of Lake Kivu, afternoon outing to bat roost on Nyamunini Island. Overnight Cormoran Lodge (Kibuye)

Day 4 (04 May)

Early morning drive to Gishwati for a hosted chimp trek and insight into Forest of Hope Association community-based conservation, tour of Karisoke Research Exhibit, overnight Bisate Lodge (Kinigi)

Day 5 (05 May)

Hosted trek to Dian Fossey grave, afternoon in Bisate community, overnight Bisate Lodge (Kinigi)

Day 6 (06 May)

Second gorilla trek, overnight Bisate Lodge (Kinigi)

Day 7 (07 May)

Depart Bisate Lodge for Kigali by road and onward arrangements

Day 1:

Today upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met by an African Horizons representative, holding a board with your surname just outside of baggage claim, and assisted to your airport hotel less than 5 minutes away for your one night stay. Day 2-3: Lewa Conservancy

Today after breakfast, check out and transfer to Wilson Airport, Nairobi, for your scheduled flight to Lewa departing at 1020hrs. Upon arrival at 1125hrs you will be met by your Lewa Safari Camp guide and proceed with game shared activities for the next two days with all meals and overnights at Lewa Safari Camp-Standard Package

Day 4-7: Masai Mara

Today after breakfast, check out and transfer to Lewa Airstrip for your scheduled flight to Masai Mara departing at 0935hrs. Upon arrival 1100hrs you will be met by yours and River Masai Mara Camp guide and proceed with game shared activities for the next four days with all meals and overnights at Sand River Masai Mara-Luxury Tent Package

Day 8: End of itinerary

Today after breakfast check out and transfer to Keekorok Airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Wilson Airport departing at 1100hrs. Upon arrival at 1215hrs you will be met by an African Horizons representative and transported for a farewell lunch at Tamambo in the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. After lunch, and with some time for shopping, you will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward departure flight.
